Centennial Anniversary of the First Republic of Azerbaijan was celebrated in Switzerland
On May 23, 2018, the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan hosted the official ceremony in Bern to mark 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR).
The event was attended by the Swiss Deputy Secretary Krystyna Marty Lang, Ambassadors and other members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the Swiss Government agencies and society at large, as well as members of Azerbaijani diaspora in Switzerland.
In her opening speech Ambassador Hanum Ibrahimova informed the audience about the history of ADR, highlighting that this was the first ever Republic created in the Muslim Orient. Recounting the progressive steps undertaken by ADR, she emphasized that ADR, preceding even a number of advanced democracies, granted women the right to vote. She noted that ADR, in general, re-established statehood traditions of Azerbaijan and set the stage for the modern independent Azerbaijan. Touching upon Swiss-Azerbaijani relations, Ambassador characterized Switzerland as a reliable partner, with whom Azerbaijan enjoys excellent political and economic cooperation.
Krystyna Marty Lang congratulating Republic of Azerbaijan with centennial anniversary of ADR, emphasized that Switzerland appreciates the positive dynamics in bilateral relations of two countries.
After official statements, the ceremony continued with the concert of the leading vocalist of Azerbaijan State Opera and Ballet Theatre Mrs. Fidan Hajiyeva. Together with young violinists Elvin Ganizade and Jamila Garayusifli, and accompanied by the pianist Saida Taghizade, she performed both Azerbaijani and foreign compositions on the stage.
At the end of the ceremony the guests were invited to taste dishes both from Azerbaijani and European cuisine.
